Southwest Atlanta

The Southwest Atlanta community consists of several neighborhoods. One of the most significant is the historic West End, which was established even before the city of Atlanta was given its current name. West End is characterized by mid-19th century Queen Anne and Victorian homes, including the Joel Chandler Harris Home. Known as the Wren’s Nest, this historic landmark was once owned and lived in by famous African American author and journalist Joel Chandler Harris. Harris moved into the home in 1881, shortly after publishing his first book of Uncle Remus Tales. Today, Wren’s Nest is Atlanta’s oldest house museum.

For planning purposes, Southwest Atlanta is designated as part of Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) R. The NPU system allows citizens to participate in the ongoing zoning and land-use decisions made by the city. This participation has been particularly important in recent years, as Atlanta has been working to revitalize and modernize the older parts of the city to continue to improve the quality of life for residents. Designated neighborhoods within NPU-R include Adams Park, Laurens Valley, Southwest, Greenbriar, Campbellton Road and Fort Valley.

Greenbriar, the location of Greenbriar Mall, is at the southernmost tip of the NPU. North of Greenbriar are the Southwest and Campbellton Road communities. North of Campbellton Road is Laurens Valley and Adams Park. Fort Valley is situated at the eastern edge of the NPU.
