Southwest Atlanta has a history and culture that is distinct from the rest of the city. Its upper-middle class neighborhoods, like Adams Park, cater to Atlanta’s most influential and prestigious African-American residents. Residential and commercial developers have looked to Southwest Atlanta with renewed attention in recent years, building high quality housing options and expanding retail and dining opportunities.

The community is located on the outskirts of Atlanta, towards the city of East Point and the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Southwest Atlanta consists primarily of suburban residential neighborhoods, with a mix of older and newer housing. Southwest residents do most of their shopping at the Greenbriar Mall, but the Mall West End and City Center Shopping Center are nearby as well. A notable entertainment site is the Magic Johnson Theatre near the Greenbriar Mall. Residents also have access to several city-operated recreational centers, nature preserves and parks, including Adams Community Park. Adams is a 37-acre site featuring ball fields, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a lake, the Tup Holmes Golf Course and The Atlanta Hawks Reading and Learning Center. These facilities are managed by the Bureau of Parks within the southwest maintenance district. Public education is provided by Atlanta Public Schools, which operates a total of more than 100 campuses. Schools located within Southwest Atlanta include Therell High School, Continental Colony Elementary, Kimberly Elementary, Cascade Elementary and Venetian Hills Elementary.
